Jordan Schroeder (born September 29, 1990 in Prior Lake , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Finnish club Jokerit Helsinki from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since May 2020 and is there in the position of right winger plays. On an international level, Schroeder won the gold medal with the US national team at the 2010 U20 Junior World Championship .
Career
Career as a high school and college player
Jordan Schroeder played in his youth for the Saint Thomas Academy , a high school and military academy near St. Paul in the US state of Minnesota . With the Saint Thomas Cadets , he won the Minnesota High School Championship in 2006. Following the 2005/06 season, he moved for the next two years to the U18 team of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program , which played in the United States Hockey League (USHL). In his second USHL season, Schroeder was the most successful points collector of his team with 21 goals and a total of 53 points scorer in 55 completed games.
The striker attended the University of Minnesota at the beginning of the 2008/09 season and played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers , the university's ice hockey team, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). In his first year with the Golden Gophers, he was the team's second most successful scorer. He was also honored as WCHA Rookie of the Year and was elected to the WCHA Second All-Star Team and the WCHA All-Rookie Team. Prior to the 2009 NHL Entry Draft , Schroeder was rated as the fifth best North American junior player. In the draft, Schroeder was finally selected in the first 22nd position by the Vancouver Canucks . The reason for the much later election than predicted by the NHL scouting office is his comparatively small body size, as well as his inadequate performance at the end of the U20 Junior World Championship , which was held a few months before the Entry Draft.
Career as a professional player
After the NHL Entry Draft, Jordan Schroeder completed another season for the University of Minnesota in the WCHA. A few days after the end of the season for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the winger signed an NHL entry contract with the Vancouver Canucks. Schroeder was then sent to the Manitoba Moose , the Canucks farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL). In his first game for the Moose, Schroeder scored two goals; In total, the attacker came to eleven missions in the regular season , with nine points scorer. In the subsequent play-offs, his team met the Hamilton Bulldogs . The Manitoba Moose lost to the Bulldogs in the best-of-seven series after six games with 2: 4. Jordan Schroeder scored a hat trick in the third game in the series .
Before the start of the 2010/11 NHL season , Schroeder attended the Canucks training camp, but was not nominated for the NHL team and sent back to Vancouver's AHL farm team. In his first full season in the American Hockey League, the striker was unable to match the points average from the previous year and scored 34 points in a total of 75 completed games. After this season, the Manitoba Moose franchise was dissolved due to the return of the Winnipeg Jets to the National Hockey League , relocated to St. John's in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador and renamed St. John's IceCaps . The Vancouver Canucks then ended the collaboration with the team and began a collaboration with the AHL franchise Chicago Wolves . For the Wolves, Schroeder completed all games in the 2011/12 season and ended the season as the team's third-best points collector.
After the Canucks did not renew his contract after the 2013-14 season , he joined the Minnesota Wild in July 2014 . He spent three years there, alternating between the NHL and AHL, before the Wild sold him to the Columbus Blue Jackets in June 2017 in exchange for Dante Salituro . There, too, the attacker commuted between the two leagues in the 2017/18 season and mainly played for the Cleveland Monsters . After the season he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for goalkeeper Jean-François Bérubé . From the Blackhawks he was used exclusively in the farm team, the Rockford IceHogs , in the AHL. In May 2019 he was signed by Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod from the Continental Hockey League (KHL). However, he left the club after a season and moved to league rivals Jokerit Helsinki .
International
Jordan Schroeder represented his home country with the US national team for the first time at the 2007 U18 World Junior Championship . In this tournament, the Americans won the silver medal after losing to the Russian team in the final . Behind his teammates Colin Wilson and James van Riemsdyk, Schroeder was the third best point collector of the competition. At the U18 Junior World Championship the following year, he finished third with his team. Three months earlier he was the youngest player in the US squad to take part in the U20 World Junior Championship . There he was behind van Riemsdyk the second best scorer of the team, which reached fourth place in this tournament. Schroeder was also the youngest player on the team at the U20 Junior World Championship in 2009 . In this tournament, the American selection was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Slovak national team .
During the quarter-final match between the US and Finnish national teams at the U20 World Junior Championship in 2010 , Jordan Schroeder scored his 26th scorer point and overtook Jeremy Roenick as the most successful US American scorer at U20 World Championships. He also took third place in the all-time ranking of this category with a total of 20th assists. The Americans won this game and the following semi-finals against the Swedish selection . In the final, the team met the Canadian national team ; the US-Americans won this game with 6: 5 goals.
At the 2016 World Cup , Schroeder played for the senior national team for the first time and took fourth place with the team.
