Prior Lake is a city and a suburb about 30 km southwest of central Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota . The city is located in Scott County and in 2000 there were 15,917 inhabitants. The place is growing and the official estimate for 2006 was 21,542 inhabitants. The growth is attributed to the completion of the Minnesota State Route 13 expansion and the attractiveness of the two urban lakes. The city was founded in 1851 and is one of the oldest settlements in what is now the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul's territory.
Most of the urban area was sold by the Mdewakanton Dakota , but parts of Prior Lake remained tribal and are part of the Shakopee-Mdewakanton Indian Reservation . Two casinos, Mystic Lake Casino and Little Six Casino are located in this zone.
geography
The city is located south of the Minnesota River in an area called the South of the River . It encloses the upper and lower Prior Lake and forms the south-southwestern extension of the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, ranked 16th out of the population in the United States .
The two lakes are lined up with Spring Lake to the southwest, but not part of the urban area. Together, Lower and Upper Prior Lake form the largest lake area in the south of the metropolitan area.
According to the data of the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 41.5 km² , of which 34.9 km² is land and 6.6 km² (= 15.77%) is water.

Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Prior Lake was inhabited by 15,917 people. The population density was 454.9 people per km ². There were 5791 housing units at an average of 165.5 per km ². The Prior Lake population was 94.53% White , 0.77% Black or African American , 2.08% Native American , 0.94% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.33% said belonging to other races and 1.31% named two or more races. 1.11% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Prior Lakes were distributed to 5645 households out of which 44.2% had children under 18 years of age. 66.3% of households were married, 7.6% had a female head of the household without a husband and 22.3% were not families. 15.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 3.5% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.17.
The urban population was divided into 30.3% minors, 6.4% 18–24 year olds, 37.7% 25–44 year olds, 20.7% 45–64 year olds and 4.9% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women there were 102.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 102.1 men.
The median household income in Prior Lake was 75,363 US dollars, and the median family income reached the level of 81,011 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 52,061 compared to $ 34,837 for women. The per capita income for Prior Lake was $ 32,089. 3.6% of the population and 1.7% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 3.4% of minors and 7.1% of those aged 65 and over.
Administration and politics
Prior Lake is administered by a mayor and four elected councilors. The city is run by a city manager.
Prior Lake is located in Minnesota Legislative District 35A and is represented in the Minnesota Senate by Claire Robling and in the Minnesota House of Representatives by Michael Beard ; both belong to the Republican Party .
At the federal level, Prior Lake is located in Minnesota's second congressional electoral district and is represented in the US House of Representatives by Republican John Kline .
Culture and media
There are two weekly newspapers in Prior Lake , Prior Lake American and Thisweek Prior Lake .
Following the Littleton School Massacre , journalist Elinor Burkett followed students and teachers at Prior Lake High School for a year. She chooses this school because Prior Lake is demographically very similar to Columbine , Colorado . She documented her experiences in the book Another Planet: A Year in the Life of a Suburban High School ( ISBN 0-06-050585-0 ).
