The community of Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux (SMSC, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community) was formerly a Prior Lake Indian Reservation known until November 28, 1969 by the Indian Reorganization Act in the Shakopee Mdewakanton-reservation has been renamed.

A census from 2000 found a population of 338 people living on the reservation. The tribe operates the Mystic Lake Casino and the Little Six Casino, both Indian casinos are very successful due to their proximity to the metropolitan area of ​​Minneapolis-Saint Paul. The tribe members are direct descendants of the Dakota sub-tribe of the Mdewakanton , who lived in villages near the banks of the lower Minnesota River.
