The Cataractes de Shawinigan ( English Shawinigan Cataractes ) are a professional Canadian junior ice hockey team from Shawinigan in the province of Québec , which currently plays in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). The franchise has played its home games at the Center Gervais Auto since December 2008 , previously the Aréna Jacques Plante was the home ground. The epithet Cataractes means waterfalls , based on the famous Shawinigan Falls .
history
In 1969 the franchise was a founding member of the LHJMQ as Shawinigan Bruins , and it is also the only team that still operates in the same city to this day. In 1973 the team was renamed Shawinigan Dynamos and finally in 1978 in the current name.
In 1985 and 2001 the Cataractes won the Trophée Jean Rougeau as regular season champions, but the team has never won the LHJMQ championship. This makes the Cataractes behind the Saskatoon Blades from the WHL the team that has been waiting for a championship in the Canadian Hockey League the second longest .
In 1985, the franchise took part for the first time in the club's history in the Memorial Cup , the championship of the umbrella organization CHL, which is played annually between the champions of the three Canadian top junior leagues WHL, OHL and LHJMQ. As a host, the team reached the final, but lost there against the Prince Albert Raiders . In the local arena Jacques Plante, however, only the first two games of the tournament took place, as the remaining games were moved to Drummondville due to pillars in the stadium that impaired TV images .
In 2012 Shawinigan took part again in the Memorial Cup , as one was selected for the second time as the venue for the tournament. This time the games were played in the new Center Bionest . Although the Cataractes were in last place after the preliminary round, the team managed to make it back to the final after two wins in the qualifying games. There the Cataractes faced the London Knights from the OHL . With a goal in overtime Shawinigan managed the 2-1 final victory and thus the first win of the Memorial Cup.
