William Robert Poage (born December 28, 1899 in Waco , Texas , † January 3, 1987 in Temple , Texas) was an American politician . He represented the state of Texas as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Poage was born in Waco in 1899. After that, his family moved to Throckmorton County in 1901 , where they settled near Woodson . Poage attended the village school in Throckmorton County. During World War I he served as a private in the United States Navy .

After the war, he attended the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Colorado at Boulder . He then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in Waco in 1921 . He then worked from 1920 to 1922 in agriculture. He then took a position as a teacher of geology at Baylor University, which he held from 1922 to 1924. He also made his Bachelor of Laws in the legal department of Baylor University in 1924 . He was admitted to the bar in the same year and opened a practice in Waco. He taught law at Baylor University from 1924 to 1928. He was also a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1925 to 1929 and a member of the State Senate from 1931 to 1937 .

Poage was a delegate to the Texas Democratic Convention in 1922. In 1956, 1960 and 1964 he was also a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . He was elected a Democrat in the 75th and 20 subsequent Congresses. His term of office lasted from January 3, 1937 until his resignation on December 31, 1978. In 1978 he decided not to run for the 96th Congress. During his tenure he was Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture (90th to 93rd Congress). Furthermore, in 1956 he did not participate in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

William Poage died on January 3, 1987 in Temple, where he lived. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery , Waco. A federal building in Temple was named after him.
