Sheila Jackson Lee

Sheila Jackson Lee (born January 12, 1950 in New York City ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives since 1995 .

Career

Sheila Jackson Lee attended Jamaica High School in New York and then studied at Yale University until 1972 . After completing a law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and admission to the bar, she began working in this profession in 1975. From 1977 to 1979 she was an advisor to the Select Committee on Assassinations , a congressional committee investigating the spectacular political assassinations of the 1960s, including the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King . From 1987 to 1990 she was a judge in Houston . At the same time she began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1990 and 1994 she was a member of the Houston City Council.

In the 1994 congressional election , Lee was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th constituency of Texas , where she succeeded Craig Anthony Washington on January 3, 1995 and was re-elected. Her legislative period runs until January 3, 2021. She was and is a member of the Justice Committee and the Committee on Internal Security, as well as five sub-committees. She is also a member of some Congressional Caucuses . The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fall during her time as congressman .

Lee is married to law professor Elwyn C. Lee, who is, among other things, vice president of public relations at the University of Houston .
