John Hall Stephens

John Hall Stephens (born November 22, 1847 in Shelby County , Texas , †  November 18, 1924 in Monrovia , California ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1917 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Stephens attended the Mansfield Public Schools and Mansfield College . After studying law at Cumberland University in Lebanon ( Tennessee ) and being admitted to the bar in 1872, he began to work in this profession from 1873 in Montague and Vernon . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Texas Senate between 1886 and 1888 .

In the 1896 congressional election , Stephens was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Jeremiah V. Cockrell on March 4, 1897 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1917 . Since 1911 he was chairman of the Indian committee. During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . In 1913 the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified.

In 1916, John Stephens was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives ended, he moved to Monrovia, California, where he spent his old age. He died there on November 18, 1924.
