The species forms loose to moderately dense, dark green or yellowish to brown-green lawns. The plants, which are up to 5 centimeters in size, are moderately tomentose. The upright to slightly sickle-shaped leaves are lanceolate and tapering into a tubular awl tip, toothed downwards and brittle. The long protruding rib takes up about a third of the leaf width at the leaf base; in cross-section it has two stereo bands. Leaf wing cells are clearly pronounced. The lamina cells are square to short rectangular above and sometimes two-layered, somewhat elongated at the leaf base. Sporophytes are very rarely formed. The capsule on the yellowish seta is erect, oblong, cylindrical and furrowed with dryness.

Distribution and location requirements

The distribution is subcontinental-montane. The European occurrences are mainly in Central Europe, especially in the low mountain ranges, in the Alps and in the Alpine foothills; The species is very rare in the lowlands. It is absent in the British Isles and Iceland. Outside of Europe there are also deposits in Asia and North America.

The lime-avoiding moss usually grows on silicate rock, only rarely on tree bark. The locations are usually in forests in shady to fairly sunny, dry, but humid places. It is often associated with Dicranum scoparium , Grimmia hartmanii , Hedwigia ciliata , Hypnum cupressiforme or Paraleucobryum longifolium .
