Jeremiah V. Cockrell
Jeremiah Vardaman Cockrell (born May 7, 1832 in Warrensburg , Missouri , † March 18, 1915 in Abilene , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1897 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Jeremiah Cockrell was the brother of US Senator Francis Cockrell (1834-1915). He attended public schools in his home country as well as Chapel Hill College . He went to California during the gold rush in 1849 . In 1853 he returned to Missouri, where he worked in agriculture. After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. During the Civil War , Cockrell served in the Confederation Army , where he rose to colonel. After the war, he settled in Sherman , where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1872 he became a district judge in Grayson County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1878 and 1880 he was a delegate to the regional Democratic Party conventions in Texas. Then he moved to Jones County . Between 1885 and 1893 he served as a judge in the 39th judicial district of his state.
In the congressional election of 1892 , Cockrell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the then newly established 13th constituency of Texas , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1893. After a re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1897 . In 1896 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Jeremiah Cockrell worked in Jones County as a farmer and rancher. He died on March 18, 1915 in Abilene. He had five children with his wife, Maranda Douglas.
