William Neff Patman (born March 26, 1927 in Texarkana , Texas , †  December 9, 2008 in Houston , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1985 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Patman was the son of Congressman Wright Patman (1893-1976). He attended the common schools and in the federal capital Washington, DC In 1944 he graduated from Kemper Military School in Boonville ( Missouri ). In the final stages of World War II he was a soldier in the Marine Corps between 1945 and 1946 . He later served as a reserve captain in the Air Force between 1953 and 1966 . In the meantime he worked as a diplomatic courier in the foreign service between 1949 and 1950. After studying law at the University of Texas at Austin and his admission to the bar in 1953, he began to work in this profession. From 1953 to 1955 he served on the Texas State Railroad's legal side. He then practiced as a private lawyer. He was also the legal representative of the municipality of Ganado between 1955 and 1960 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1961 and 1980 he was a member of the Texas Senate . In addition, from 1960 to 1978 he was a delegate at all regional party conferences of the Democrats.

In the 1980 congressional election , Patman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 14th  constituency of Texas, where he succeeded Joseph P. Wyatt on January 3, 1981 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1985 . In 1984 he was not re-elected. After the end of his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Patman retired, which he spent in Ganado. He died of stomach cancer on December 9, 2008 in Houston.
