Albert Bustamante

Albert Garza Bustamante (born April 8, 1935 in Asherton , Dimmit County , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1985 and 1993 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Albert Bustamante attended Asherton High School until 1954 . Between 1954 and 1956 he was a parachutist in the service of the US Army . He then continued his education until 1958 with an art degree at San Antonio College . He graduated from Sul Ross State College in Alpine in 1961 . After that he worked as a teacher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1968 to 1971 he was on the staff of Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez . Between 1973 and 1978, Bustamante served on the county council of Bexar County . He was a judge in the same district between 1979 and 1985.

In the 1984 congressional election , Bustamante was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Abraham Kazen on January 3, 1985 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . He was temporarily a member of the Armed Forces Committee .

In 1992 he came into conflict with the law. He was charged with fraud and other criminal activities and sentenced in 1993 to 42 months in prison. That ended his political career. Today he lives with his wife in San Antonio , where he runs a supermarket.
