Augustus McCloskey

Augustus McCloskey (born September 23, 1877 in San Antonio , Texas , †  July 21, 1950 there ) was an American politician . In 1929 and 1930 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Augustus McCloskey attended the public schools in his home country and worked as a stenographer from 1903 to 1907. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1907, he began to work in this profession in San Antonio. Between 1920 and 1928 he was a judge in Bexar County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In June 1928 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Houston , where Al Smith was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the 1928 congressional election , McCloskey was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Harry M. Wurzbach on March 4, 1929 , whom he had previously defeated. However, the latter filed an objection to the outcome of the election. When this was complied with, McCloskey had to cede his mandate in Congress on February 10, 1930 to Wurzbach. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1943 and 1947 he served as a judge in San Antonio; after that he worked as a lawyer again. Augustus McCloskey died in San Antonio on July 21, 1950.
