Silvestre Reyes (born November 10, 1944 in Canutillo , El Paso County , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Between 1997 and 2013 he was a member of the US House of Representatives for Texas .

biography

After attending Canutillo High School , he studied between 1964 and 1966 first at the University of Texas at Austin and then at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) without obtaining a degree. After completing his military service in the US Army from 1966 to 1968, he was a member of the school board of his hometown Canutillo for one year . He then worked for the US Immigration and Naturalization Service from 1969 to 1995 . In the meantime, he completed his studies at El Paso Community College , where he obtained an associate degree (AA) in 1976 .

In the 1996 election , Reyes was elected as a Democratic candidate for the first time as a member of the US House of Representatives and represented there from January 3, 1997 the 16th congressional electoral  district of Texas, which includes the city of El Paso and its suburban area in the west of the state . From 2007 he was chairman of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence . In addition, Reyes, who also represented the interests of Hispanics in Congress due to his origins , was also a member of the Committee on Armed Services . In 2012 he lost his party's primary to Beto O'Rourke with 44.4 to 50.5 percent of the vote, despite the fact that he was supported in the election campaign by Barack Obama and Bill Clinton . His mandate ended on January 3, 2013.
