Gordon J. Russell
Gordon James Russell (born December 22, 1859 in Huntsville , Alabama , † September 14, 1919 in Kerrville , Texas ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1902 and 1910 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives ; later he became a federal judge .
Career
Gordon Russell attended the common schools, the Sam Bailey Institute in Griffin ( Georgia ) and the Crawford High School , also in Georgia. He then studied at the University of Georgia in Athens until 1877 . In the meantime he taught in Dalton as a teacher. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1878, he began in Dalton to work in this profession. In 1879 Russell moved to Texas. Since 1884 he lived in Van Zandt County there . In 1890 he became a district judge for a short time. From 1892 to 1896 Russell was a District Attorney in the Seventh District of Texas. He then worked as a judge in the same district until 1902.
Politically, Russell was a member of the Democratic Party . After the death of MP Reese C. De Graffenreid , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the third seat in Texas , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1902. After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on June 14, 1910 . This came after his appointment as a judge at the federal district court for the eastern part of Texas, where he succeeded the late David Ezekiel Bryant . He held this office until his death on September 14, 1919; he suffered from tuberculosis .
