Kerrville is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Kerr County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in south-central Texas, 140 km west of Austin , 94 km northwest of San Antonio , on Interstate 10 and the junction of Highways 16 and 27 and has a total area of 43.9 km², of which 0.6 km² is water is.
history
The area was settled 10,000 years ago. The first European settlers were successful as clapboard makers.
Kerrville was named after James Kerr , a major who took part in the Texan Revolution . Today the place is known for the annual Kerrville Folk Festival and Schreiner University , a private university of the seven liberal arts . Kerrville became a local commercial center that served the middle and upper portions of Hill Country in the 1840s. Joshua D. Brown was one of the earliest clapboard makers in the area. He led several families on an exploration of the Guadalupe Valley.

According to the census in 2000 , 20,425 people lived here in 8,563 households and 5,411 families. The population density was 471.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 85.89% White, 2.99% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 8.20% other ethnic groups. About 1.73% were mixed race and 22.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,563 households, 22.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.8% of these were married couples living together. 10.2% were single mothers and 36.8% were non-families. 33.1% of all households were single households and there were people living in 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
21% of the population were under 18 years old, 8% 18 to 24, 21.3% 25 to 44, 20.4% 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 87.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 83.0 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,085 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,979. Males had a median income of $ 27,555 versus $ 19,923 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,193. 15.6% of the population and 11.7% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 25.8% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.8% were 65 or older.
