Larry Combest

Larry Ed Combest (born March 20, 1945 in Memphis , Hall County , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1985 and 2003 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Larry Combest studied at West Texas State University in Canyon until 1969 . After that he worked as a farmer. In 1971, he served briefly as a division director at the US Department of Agriculture . Between 1971 and 1978 Combest served on the staff of US Senator John Tower . He also worked as a private businessman. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1984 congressional election , Combest was elected to the 19th  constituency of Texas in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Kent Hance on January 3, 1985 . After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on May 31, 2003 . Between 1995 and 1997 he was chairman of the secret service committee ; since 1999 he has headed the Agriculture Committee . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 and the beginning of the Iraq war fell .

Combest's resignation came shortly after the deaths of his father and a daughter. These deaths led him to change his lifestyle and resign. After a by-election, his mandate fell to Randy Neugebauer .
