Charles Eugene "Chip" Roy (born August 7, 1972 in Bethesda , Maryland , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Republican Party , he has held the 21st seat of the State of Texas in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Chip Roy was born on August 7, 1972 in Bethesda , Maryland , and grew up in Lovettsville , Virginia . He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Virginia and spent three years as an analyst for investment banks . He later received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law .

Roy met his wife at the University of Texas and they have two children. In 2011 he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma .

Political career

Chip Roy worked for the Texas Attorney General , John Cornyn . He supported him in the election campaign for the United States Senate in 2002 . He served on the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas .

He later served on the State and Federal Relations Office of Texas Governor Rick Perry . In 2010 he was Perry's ghostwriter for his book Fed Up! . The Texan Senator Ted Cruz selected Roy as Chief of Staff in 2012 . After Ken Paxton was elected Texas Attorney General, Roy became the first assistant attorney general. In 2016, Roy chaired the Trusted Leadership - Political Action Committee , which Ted Cruz supported in the 2016 US presidential election .

Chip Roy won the Republican primary on March 6, 2018 for the election of the 21st seat of the state of Texas in the United States House of Representatives with 27.1 percent of the vote, ahead of Matt McCall, who got 16.9 percent. Third place went to William Negley with 15.5 percent.

He won the election for the 21st seat of the state of Texas in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018 against Joseph Kopser of the Democratic Party with 50.2 percent of the vote. Third place went to Lee Santos from the Libertarian Party .
