Herbert Ray Roberts (born March 28, 1913 in Collin County , Texas , † April 13, 1992 in Denton , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1962 and 1981 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ray Roberts attended McKinney High School and then studied at Texas A&M University . He later studied at North Texas State University and the University of Texas . During the Second World War he served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945 , whose reserve he was a member in the following years. It was reactivated again in the Korean War . After the war, Roberts worked as a private businessman and as a farmer. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1955 and 1962 he was a member of the Texas Senate , of which he was President in 1961.

After the death of MP Sam Rayburn , Roberts was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 30, 1962, when the by-election was due for the fourth seat in Texas . After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1981 . From 1975 to 1981 he was chairman of the veterans committee. During his time as a congressman, the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair as well as the height of the civil rights movement fell .

In 1980 Ray Roberts declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew into retirement. He died on April 13, 1992 in Denton.
