Charles Stenholm

Charles Walter Stenholm (born October 26, 1938 in Stamford , Jones County , Texas ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 2005 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Stenholm attended public schools in his home country including Stamford High School , which he graduated from in 1957. He then continued his education until 1959 at Tarleton State Junior College in Stephenville . This was followed by a study at Texas Tech University in Lubbock until 1962 . In the following years he worked as a farmer, teacher and private businessman. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1972 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach , where George McGovern was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the 1978 congressional election , Stenholm was elected to the 17th constituency of Texas in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Omar Truman Burleson on January 3, 1979 . After twelve re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 13 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2005 . He was considered a conservative democrat and, among other things, was against laws on private gun control. Otherwise agriculture and financial affairs were the focus of his parliamentary activities. He became a member of the Agriculture Committee. In the 1990s he was an opponent of President Bill Clinton within his party . He even voted with Republicans to oust Clinton on three out of four counts in the unsuccessful impeachment proceedings against the president . Later he was also an opponent of the financial policies of the administration of President George W. Bush . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell .

In 2004 Charles Stenholm was not re-elected. Since the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he has worked as a lobbyist .
