David B. Culberson
David Browning Culberson (born September 29, 1830 in Troup County , Georgia , † May 7, 1900 in Jefferson , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1897 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
David Culberson attended the Georgia public schools and Brownwood College in LaGrange . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began to work in this profession in Dadeville ( Alabama ). In 1856 he moved to Texas. From 1861 he was based in Jefferson, where he practiced as a lawyer. Politically, Culberson was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1859 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives . During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . In doing so, he rose from a simple soldier to a colonel.
After serving in the military, David Culberson continued his political career. In 1864 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Texas. In 1874 and 1875 he was a member and president of the State Senate . In the congressional elections of 1874 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Texas , where he succeeded William P. McLean on March 4, 1875 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1897 . From 1883 he represented the fourth district of his state as the successor to Roger Q. Mills . From 1887 to 1889 and again between 1891 and 1895 Culberson was chairman of the judiciary committee . In 1896 he declined to run again.
After his tenure in the US House of Representatives ended, Culberson became a member of a commission to review federal law. He held this post until his death on May 7, 1900 in Jefferson. He was married to Eugenia Kimball, with whom he had two children, including the son Charles (1855-1925), the governor of Texas and then US senator for that state.
