The Untertorturm , also known as the rock castle , is a former gate tower from the 13th century in Bern , Switzerland . It stands at Klösterlistutz 2 and 4.

history

The tower was built around 1260 as part of the city's defense; it was first mentioned in documents in 1335. In 1583 the facade was changed significantly and the tower lost its medieval appearance. Until around 1630 the road out of the city ran through the gate next to the tower.

In 1764 the tower was rebuilt and received the tent roof that is still visible today. Later it lost its military importance. In 1862 it was sold into private hands and converted into a residential building. Among other things, the moat was filled in, the baroque triumphal arch demolished, a staircase added and several window openings broken out.

Between 2000 and 2002 the tower was extensively restored at the expense of the civic community of Bern . Since the late 19th century, the Untertorturm has been called a romantic rock castle .
