Ed Gossett
Ed Lee Gossett (born January 27, 1902 with Many , Sabine Parish , Louisiana , † November 6, 1990 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1951 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1908, Ed Gossett and his parents moved to a farm near Henrietta in Clay County , Texas. He attended the public schools of his new home and then studied until 1924 at the University of Texas at Austin . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1927, he began to work in Vernon in this profession. In 1937, he moved his residence and law firm to Wichita Falls . Between 1933 and 1937 he was a prosecutor in the 46th Judicial District of Texas. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the 1938 congressional election , Gossett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of Texas , where he succeeded William D. McFarlane on January 3, 1939 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on July 31, 1951 . Between 1941 and 1947 he was chairman of the second electoral committee. By 1941, more New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. During his final years in Congress, the Cold War overshadowed its work.
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Ed Gossett practiced law again. He was also the senior lawyer at Texas Southwestern Telephone Co. He later became a judge in the Dallas Criminal Court. He held this office until his death on November 6, 1990.
