Walter Gresham

Walter Gresham (born July 22, 1841 in Newtown , King and Queen County , Virginia , †  November 6, 1920 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1895 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Gresham attended Stevensville Academy and Edgeville Academy . He then studied until 1863 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . He then served in the Confederation Army during the Civil War . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1867, he began working in this profession in Galveston . In 1872 he was a district attorney in his new home. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1886 and 1891 he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1892 Gresham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the tenth constituency of Texas, where he succeeded Joseph D. Sayers on March 4, 1893 . Since he was not confirmed in 1894, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1895 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Gresham practiced as a lawyer in Galveston again. He died in Washington on November 6, 1920 and was buried in Galveston.
