Abraham Kazen
Abraham Kazen Jr. (born January 17, 1919 in Laredo , Texas , † November 29, 1987 in Austin , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1967 and 1985 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .
Life
Abraham Kazen attended Laredo High School until 1937 and then studied at the University of Texas until 1940 . After a subsequent law degree at Cumberland University in Lebanon , Tennessee , and his admission as a lawyer in 1942, he began to work in Laredo in this profession. In the same year he joined the US Army Air Corps and served during the Second World War after piloting in Lubbock in North Africa, Sicily and Italy . After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1947 and 1952, Kazen was an MP in the Texas House of Representatives ; from 1952 to 1966 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he was President in 1959. He was a member of the Texas Legislative Council for 16 years .
In 1960 and 1964 Kazen was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions , at which John F. Kennedy and later Lyndon B. Johnson were nominated as presidential candidates. In the 1966 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 23rd constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Joe R. Pool on January 3, 1967 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1985 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the Watergate affair and the final phase of the civil rights movement took place .
In 1984 Abraham Kazen was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. He died on November 29, 1987 in Austin and was buried in his birthplace, Laredo.
