Rubén E. Hinojosa (born August 20, 1940 in Edcouch , Hidalgo County , Texas ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1997 to 2017 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Rubén Hinojosa attended Mercedes High School and then studied at the University of Texas in Austin until 1962 . Then he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1974 and 1984 he was a member of the Texas State Board of Education . He also lectured at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburgh . From 1993 to 1996 he was the chairman of the board of directors of South Texas Community College in Hidalgo and Starr Counties .

In the 1996 congressional election , Hinojosa was elected to the 15th  constituency of Texas in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Kika de la Garza on January 3, 1997 . Since he was re-elected in all subsequent elections up to and including 2014, he was able to exercise his mandate until January 3, 2017. On that day, he had to resign from Congress because he was no longer a candidate in 2016. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . He was a member of the Education and Working Committee , the Finance Committee and four sub-committees.

He and his wife Martha have a son and four daughters. The family lives privately in Mercedes .
