Robert Gammage

Robert Alton Gammage (born March 13, 1938 in Houston , Texas , † September 10, 2012 in Austin , Texas) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1977 and 1979 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Gammage attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1958 the Del Mar College in Corpus Christi . Between 1959 and 1960 he was a soldier in the US Army . He then studied until 1963 at the University of Corpus Christi and then until 1965 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville . After studying law at the University of Texas at Austin and being admitted to the bar in 1969, he worked in this profession in Houston until 1979. From 1965 to 1995 Gammage was a member of the US Navy Reserve . In the 1960s he was a lecturer at various universities in Texas. Most recently he held law lectures at the South Texas College of Law in Houston between 1971 and 1973 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives in 1971 and 1973 ; between 1973 and 1976 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1976 congressional election , Gammage was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Robert R. Casey on January 3, 1977 . Since he was not confirmed in 1978, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1979 . In 1979 and 1980, Gammage served as the Texas State's Assistant Attorney General . At that time he was also a special advisor to the Federal Ministry of Energy . From 1980 to 1982 he practiced as a lawyer in Austin; then he worked there until 1991 as a judge at the court of appeal. He was then a member of the Supreme Court of Texas until 1995 . In 2006 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the upcoming gubernatorial elections . Otherwise he last worked as a lawyer and legal advisor.
