Omar Truman Burleson (born March 19, 1906 in Anson , Texas , † May 14, 1991 in Abilene , Texas) was an American politician. He represented the state of Texas as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

Omar Burleson attended public school, Abilene Christian College and Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. He then graduated in 1929 from Cumberland University in Lebanon , Tennessee . He was admitted to the bar in the same year and then opened a practice in Gorman .

Burleson served as district attorney for Jones County from 1931 to 1934. He was then a judge for that county from 1934 to 1940. He then served as special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1940 and 1941. He was also secretary to Texas MP Sam Russell between 1941 and 1942. In 1942 he was also chief syndic of the Housing Authority of the District of Columbia . During World War II , he served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific from December 1942 to April 1946 .

After the war he was elected as a Democrat in the 80th and 15 subsequent Congresses. His term of office lasted from January 3, 1947 until his resignation on December 31, 1978. He decided not to run for the 96th Congress.

During his tenure in Congress, he was Chairman of the Committee on House Administration (84th to 90th Congress), the Joint Committee on the Library (84th to 90th Congress) and the Joint Committee on Printing (84th Congress). He also refused in 1956 to sign the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.
