Veronica Escobar (born September 15, 1969 in El Paso , Texas , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the 16th seat of the state of Texas in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Veronica Escobar was born on September 15, 1969 in El Paso , Texas . She grew up with four brothers on their parents' dairy farm .

Escobar attended Loretto Academy and Burges High School and then received a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master's from New York University . She taught English and Chicano literature at El Paso Community College .

Political career

Veronica Escobar worked as the non-profit manager and communications director for Raymond Caballero when he was the mayor of El Paso. When Caballero was not re-elected, Escobar considered going into public service with Susie Byrd, attorney Steve Ortega, and businessman Beto O'Rourke . They began to think about ways to improve urban planning, create a more diversified economy and create high quality jobs.

Escobar was elected to the El Paso County's Commission in 2006 and a County Judge in 2010.

Veronica Escobar won the Democratic primary election on March 6, 2018 for the 16th seat of the state of Texas in the United States House of Representatives with 61.4 percent of the vote, followed by Dori Fenenbock, who gained 22 percent. Third place went to Norma Chavez with 6.7 percent.

She won the election for the 16th seat of the state of Texas in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018 against Rick Seeberger of the Republican Party with 68.5 percent of the vote. Third place went to the independent candidate Ben Mendoza with 4.5 percent of the vote.
