Clyde Leonard Garrett (born December 16, 1885 in Gorman , Eastland County , Texas , †  December 18, 1959 in Eastland , Texas) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1941 he represented the state of Texas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clyde Garrett attended his home public schools as well as Hankins' Normal College . He grew up on a farm and then worked as a railroad worker for some time. In 1906 and 1907 he taught as a teacher in Sweetwater . From 1907 to 1912 he worked for the tax authorities; from 1913 to 1919 he was employed as a clerk in the administration in Eastland County. From 1920 to 1922, Garrett worked in the real estate, insurance, and banking industries. He was also City Manager in Eastland in 1922 and 1923 . Between 1929 and 1936 he was a district judge.

Politically, Garrett was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1936 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th  constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Thomas L. Blanton on January 3, 1937 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1941 . During this time, more New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . In 1940 Garrett was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

Between 1941 and 1942 he worked for the Ministry of Commerce . He was then employed by the Office of War Information until 1943 . In 1944 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional elections. In 1949 and 1950 he worked for the Veterans' Administration , which dealt with the affairs of war veterans. From 1951 to 1956 he was the head of their Waco office . In 1958 he sought the post of district judge in Eastland County, without success. Clyde Garrett died on December 18, 1959 in Eastland, where he was also buried.
