William McClellan "Mac" Thornberry (* 15. July 1958 in Clarendon , Donley County , Texas ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since 1995 he has represented the 13th Congressional Constituency of Texas in the United States House of Representatives .

Career

Mac Thornberry attended Clarendon High School until 1976 and then studied at Texas Tech University in Lubbock until 1980 . After studying law and being admitted in 1983, he began working as a lawyer. In 1993 he founded his own law firm in Amarillo . Between 1983 and 1988 he was an advisor to Congressmen Tom Loeffler (until 1985) and Larry Combest . Between 1988 and 1989 he worked for the United States Department of State ; after that he worked as a lawyer again. He also worked on the family ranch.

In the 1994 election , Thornberry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th Congressional Constituency of Texas , where he succeeded Bill Sarpalius on January 3, 1995 . As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. He is or was a member and chairman of the Armed Forces Committee and the highest-ranking member of the Republicans there ( ranking member ). He was previously a member of the special permanent secret service committee .

At the end of September 2019, Thornberry, who is considered a political heavyweight, announced that he would not run again in the 2020 election. His mandate ends on January 3, 2021. Thornberry became the sixth Republican Congressman to choose to resign after the 116th Congress , what political commentators referred to as "Texodus". They saw this as a sign that Republicans do not expect to regain a majority in the 117th Congress .

On October 29, 2019, Thornberry voted as one of 11 members of the House of Representatives against the resolution classifying the murder and deportation of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide.

Mac Thornberry is married and lives privately in Clarendon.
