Guntram Schernthaner

Guntram Schernthaner (born May 30, 1947 in Abtenau ) is an Austrian internist . After receiving his doctorate in 1972 and his habilitation in 1981, he was appointed professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna in 1987. He is a professor of internal medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and was head of the 1st Medical Department of the Rudolfstiftung Vienna from 1988 to 2013 with a focus on diabetology , endocrinology , oncology , hematology and osteology .

Schernthaner has been elected President of the Austrian Diabetes Society several times as well as a board member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI). Among other things, he was the President of the European Diabetes Congress in Vienna (1996). His main research interests are immunopathogenesis, immunogenetics and immunotherapy of type 1 diabetes, pathophysiology and therapy of vascular diabetes complications, morbid obesity and metabolic surgery, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy and pharmacotherapy of type 2 diabetes.

Schernthaner is one of the leading diabetologists in the world, he has been invited to lectures at international congresses and university clinics in more than 100 countries, his more than 350 works referenced in PubMed have been cited more than 18,000 times, his h-index is 65.
