The Castle Wehrden is a Grade II listed building in Wehrden , a town of the city Beverungen in Höxter ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ).

History and architecture

The archbishop of Paderborn Hermann Werner von Wolff-Metternich to the canal left the mansion from 1696 by Ambrose of Oelde on the remains of an older Gräftenschlosses build. The pillar portal in the eleven-axis main front is accessible via an outside staircase . The gracefully curved gable above the three central window axes dates from the 19th century. The escape at the manor house is made up of spolia brought together . At the rear, two-axle, originally single-storey corner pavilions with criss-crossing gable roofs from the end of the 18th century have been added.

In the park there is a medieval tower, which was redesigned in 1696. The battlements were later renewed. This so-called Annette or Drosteturm was often used by the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff when she visited her aunt in Wehrden.

From 1968 to 1980 the castle was used as a boarding school Weserberglandschule Schloss Wehrden . During this time, artists such as u. a. the Austrian violinist Luz Leskowitz or the Göttingen pianist Gerrit Zitterbart , as guests for a private concert .

In the 1990s, the boarding school was transformed into a rural education home for difficult-to-educate children, and the building was seriously damaged. The restoration work continues to this day, so in 2018 the castle library - which is located in the former bedroom of the prince-bishop - was lavishly cleaned book by book and the ceiling painting above it was restored. Here, the owner of the were German Foundation for Monument Protection , the Regional Council and the district government support.

Now there are exclusive rental apartments and a »wedding room« in the castle and a ballroom for events such as the autumn cocktail on the estate . Since 1990, on the last weekend in October, high-quality goods have been offered in the historic rooms of Wehrden Castle and in the restored manor barns.

From 2002 the castle park was restored according to the old original plans. In the park, some are very old, striking specimen trees such as ginkgo , dwarf beech , hornbeam , slopes - beech , laurel oak , leaved lime , chestnut , black walnut , magnolia and tulip trees , and several pyramids - oaks . Three trees are designated as natural monuments .

The estate and castle remained in the possession of the baronial line of those von Wolff-Metternich and is now used by their heirs, Alexander and Andrea von Köckritz , who also own the neighboring Amelunxen Castle .

The Catholic parish church of the Holy Family and St. Stephanus, built by Ambrosius von Oelde in the Baroque style in 1696, lies between the castle and the village of Wehrden . The hereditary burial of the baronial von Wolff-Metternich family has been on the north side of the church since 1853 .
