Amelunx Castle

The manor house Schloss Amelunxen is a listed secular building in Amelunxen , a town in Beverungen in the Höxter district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The small town around Amelunxen Castle was first mentioned in 811 in a document from Charlemagne . The existence of an estate at this time is considered to be certain. The Lords of Amelunxen were first mentioned in 1147; they were feudal men of the Abbot of Corvey . A knight's seat of the family has been occupied since 1239, but it is unclear whether this was a predecessor of the castle. During the Thirty Years War , both the castle and the place were pillaged and looted several times. The facility was sold to the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn Baron Franz Arnold von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht in 1718 . Since then the castle has been owned by the barons Wolff-Metternich , together with the neighboring Wehrden castle . Today both belong to their heirs, Alexander and Andrea von Köckritz .

The stone building with gabled oriels , a high hipped roof and a pointed gable dwelling was built in 1554. The builders were the brothers Gerd and Ludolf von Amelunxen. The apartments are arranged in mirror image. A gable was added in the middle of the 19th century. At the same time, one of the two staircases inside was removed and the common hall on the upper floor was divided. The building has portals with tracery , to which a double flight of stairs with a wide platform leads. The coats of arms of the builders are attached above the portals.

In front of the castle is the Amelunxen estate and behind the castle is the Amelunxen estate park.

The facility is privately owned and not open to the public.
