The complex includes the fortress, the courtyard complex with farmhouse from 1675, an old distillery from 1660, which is now used as a restaurant, as well as a rye barn and farm building from 1708. The entire castle complex has been restored. Part of this system is also a 700 year old, 18 meter deep well .

history

The stronghold was built in 1315 by the Corveyer Abbot Ruprecht von Horhausen from the noble family of those von Horhusen (according to other sources Ruprecht von Tomberg ) to defend against the Brunswick dukes and the counts of Everstein, who sat at the neighboring Everstein Castle in Polle . Shortly after it was built, the castrum was attacked and taken by the Count of Everstein. In 1332, under Otto and Magnus von Braunschweig , the Guelphs conquered Tonenburg. In 1343 Hermann von Everstein renounced his claims to the Tonenburg and reconciled himself with his liege lord, the Corveyer Abbot Dietrich I. von Dalwigk .

Later, the Tonenburg was also used as the residence and refuge of the Abbots of Corvey . Abbot Theodor von Beringhausen resided at the Tonenburg at the time of the “Höxter Rebellion 1603”.

In the southern vicinity of the Tonenburg estate, in Höxter-Nachtigall, from 1795 to 1923, lignite was mined underground in the "Nightingale brown coal mine" and belonged to the Ronnenberg alkali works . The clay pit of the fire bricks Johann Buch was also located near the Tonenburg. The pit was later used for garbage disposal until the 1980s.

In 1995 Viktor, Duke of Ratibor and Prince zu Corvey sold the castle to the couple Norbert and Paula Pirone, who had been running the Löwenherz villa in Lauenförde as a restaurant and accommodation facility for motorcyclists since 1978 . The entire Tonenburg complex was also converted into a motorcycle meeting place by 1998. With this concept, the building could be preserved economically.
