Borlinghausen Castle 2005

Borlinghausen Castle is a moated castle built in 1587 in Borlinghausen , a district of the municipality of Willebadessen in the Höxter district . Today it is owned by the Barons von Weichs and is registered as a monument .

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in a deed of gift from King Henry IV of December 8, 1065 under the name Burchartinchusen (House of Burchart).

The oldest part of the existing castle was built before 1411, because in that year the Counts of Waldeck enfeoffed the knight Gerd von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim with the village, castle and church fiefdom in Borlinghausen. In inheritance, Borlinghausen then passed to Johann von Spiegel zu Peckelsheim, Hereditary Marshal of the Paderborn Monastery , which also owned Schweckhausen , Holtheim and Ikenhausen as well as farms, hooves, tithes and other rights in Peckelsheim, Drankhausen , Willegassen , Löwen and Körbecke . After his death in 1559, the inheritance was shared among his four sons Georg, Werner, Raban and David in 1577. Borlinghausen went to Werner von Spiegel, who had succeeded his father as Hereditary Marshal of the Prince-Bishop of Paderborn as early as 1567 . He had the castle significantly enlarged in the Weser Renaissance style . According to an inscription, the construction was finished in 1587.

Werner von Spiegel died in 1594 and was inherited by his underage son Johann. In 1755 the property belonged to his descendant, Hereditary Marshal Johann Heinrich von Spiegel, a former officer in the service of the Duchy of Braunschweig , who had the castle rebuilt in 1779. In 1789 his only son Karl Franz Theodor inherited the property. After 1807 Baron von Spiegel-Borlinghausen became Chamberlain Jérôme Bonapartes , and his son served as a captain in his army in 1813 . In 1822 Karl Josef von Spiegel inherited Gut Borlinghausen and left it to his only child Marie Louise in 1832, who married Baron Franz Karl von Elmendorff in 1835 .

In 1839 Borlinghausen was sold to the Protestant banker Bierbaum from Braunschweig . Seven years earlier he had lent Louise 44,000  thalers so that she could pay off her mother and uncle. Bierbaum donated the estate to his eldest son Julius, who in 1847 had a waiting and observation tower built for his wife on the ridge of the Egge Mountains 431 m above sea level, which is still called “ Bierbaums Nagel ” today . From here, on a clear day, she could see Hercules , the symbol of her native Kassel . In 1860 Julius Bierbaum sold Borlinghausen to Oswald von Wendt , a former Catholic lieutenant colonel in the Austro-Hungarian army , who had the Borlinghausen church of St. Mary Help of Christians built from 1869 to 1872 . In 1877 Oswald von Wendt died unmarried. His sister Leonia, who married Oscar Laurent de Marchant et d'Ansembourg in 1837, inherited the estate. In 1880 she left it to her daughter Marie, who was married to Count Franz zu Stolberg-Stolberg from Westheim . After his death in 1912, his son Josef sold the Borlinghausen estate to Berta Freifrau von Fürstenberg, the wife of Paul von Fürstenberg from Körtlinghausen . She was a daughter of the long-time President of the Reichstag, Franz von Ballestrem .

In 1926, Klemens bought the Baron von Weichs zur Wenne castle and estate Borlinghausen. He was married to Maria Countess von Galen , a niece of the Münster Cardinal Clemens August Graf von Galen . Members of the extensive von Weichs family still live in the castle today.

Building stock

The moated castle, which is surrounded by a moat, stands a little away from the village in a park . The angular building has two storeys above a high basement and is accessed through an octagonal stair tower at an angle . The shorter wing still contains remnants of gothic predecessor building with Gothic window frames and remains of a Wasserschlaggesimses. The roof gables are decorated in the Weser Renaissance style and were renewed in 1898/99. The inscription "WERNER SPIEGEL.1587.CATARINA KANNE" is located above the ornate entrance on the stair tower.
