Franz Karl Wolfgang Ludwig Alexander Graf von Ballestrem (* 5. September 1834 on Castle Plawniowitz , district Gleiwitz , Upper Silesia ; † 23. December 1910 ibid) was a Prussian landowner , mining - Industrial and politician ( German Center Party , member of parliament).

origin

He came from the Ballestrem family , a former north Italian , later Silesian noble family and was the first son of Carl Wolfgang von Ballestrem (1801–1879) and his wife Betha von Leithold (1803–1874).

Life

Ballestrem served from 1855 as an officer in the Prussian army in the traditional 1st Cuirassier Regiment (Silesian) in Breslau, from 1860 as a regimental adjutant and from 1867 as squadron chief. After participating in the war in 1870/71, he retired from active service due to injury. In 1895 he was promoted to major in the reserve.

The convinced Catholic and "mastermind of Silesian church policy" became the papal secret chamberlain di spade i cappa in 1873 . In 1890 he was a founding member and board member of the “ People's Association for Catholic Germany ”. In 1900 he was appointed Real Privy Councilor with the salutation "Excellency".

Ballestrem was politically active as a member of the Silesian Provincial Parliament , was a member of the German Reichstag from 1872 to 1893 and from 1898 to 1907 as a member of the German Center Party , from 1890 he was parliamentary group chairman , was appointed on May 7, 1890 in place of the deceased Center Politician Georg Arbogast von und zu Franckenstein (1825–1890) was elected Vice President (until 1893) and was President of the Reichstag from 1898 to 1906 .
