Carl Wolfgang von Ballestrem
Carl Franz Wolfgang Graf von Ballestrem (born March 15, 1801 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia ; † November 20, 1879 in Biskupitz , Upper Silesia) was a German majorate and industrialist .
origin
He was the son of Carl Ludwig von Ballestrem (born November 19, 1755; † July 27, 1829) and his wife Jeanette (born von Zülow ) (born January 12, 1786; † July 3, 1840).
Life
While his two predecessors were originally officers in the management of the Ballestrem industrial estate, Carl Wolfgang had been prepared for the takeover through a technical course in Breslau . After his father's death in 1829 he inherited the property and the industrial operations. Like his predecessors, he relied heavily on the General Manager Karl Godulla of the House of Ballestrem in his undertakings .
Ballestrem pursued a cautious expansion course and did not participate in the risky industrial projects of the time. He only had speculations made on his own property. Between 1841 and 1857 he bought numerous other calamine and coal mines. A total of 33 mines were developed or acquired during his time. In 1854 he sold various mines and a piece of land to August Borsig , who wanted to build an ironworks. Some of the pits in his possession were consolidated into a large “Brandernburg” mine field and a “Catharina” complex in 1856/57. During his time there was also an intensification of the production stages between mining and processing.
Ballestrem was a member of the Prussian manor house .
family
He married on September 23, 1827 Betha von Leithold (born January 13, 1803; † April 15, 1874), the daughter of the fortress brigadier Carl Andreas Friedrich von Leithold (1769-1819). The couple had several children:
