Carl Wolfgang Graf von Ballestrem

Carl Wolfgang Graf von Ballestrem (born October 16, 1903 in Ober Gläsersdorf , Lüben district , Province of Silesia , † December 17, 1994 in Hardheim ) was a German industrialist and member of the government of the Sovereign Order of Malta .

Life

Carl Wolfgang Graf von Ballestrem was the second eldest son of Valentin von Ballestrem and his wife Agnes, née Countess zu Stolberg-Stolberg (born May 11, 1874 on Gut Thomaswaldau, Bunzlau district; † March 26, 1940 on Gut Ober Gläsersdorf). He was married to Theresia Princess zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1909–2000). The marriage resulted in four children, including a. the political scientist and philosopher Karl Graf Ballestrem .

After attending grammar school in Breslau , Ballestrem studied law in Munich and completed this subject with a doctorate after interim semesters in theology and philosophy. In 1932 he took over the management of the family-owned company "Vereinigte Holzindustrie" in Silesia. After losing his Silesian homeland, he first headed the Princely Löwenstein Forestry Office in Wertheim and in 1956 he moved with his family to the Hofgut Breitenau in the Odenwald.

From 1926 Ballestrem was Knight of Honor and Devotion in obedience of the Sovereign Order of Malta and since 1947 Chairman of the Association of Silesian Knights of Malta . In this role he was instrumental in the work on the reform of the order under Pope Pius XII. included. In 1962 he became a member of the Roman order's government as a major hospitalier and in this role was responsible for the charitable activities of the order as a whole worldwide. In his 13-year service in this office, he brought his experience into building up the German Malteser Aid Service .
