Valentin Wolfgang Gustav Alexander Joseph Christian Graf von Ballestrem (born December 21, 1860 in Breslau , province of Silesia ; † May 17, 1920 at Plawniowitz Castle , district of Gleiwitz ) was a German coal and steel industrialist and politician ( center ).

Life

As the heir to the Ballestrem family fortune, he was considered one of the richest men in Germany. He was a co-owner of the most powerful economic empire in the German Empire that the Ballestrems had built up since 1798. The property management was in Ruda . The group included u. a. in the vicinity of Gliwice the VOH-Hütte (later “Hütte des 1. Mai”), the rolling mill of Laband AG, “Consolidation Bergbau” and 50% of the shares in the sand track of Peißkretscham (today Pyskowice ). The Oberschlesische Eisenbahnbedarf AG in Gleiwitz, which now also includes the Huldschinsky works and which controlled the Friedenshütte and Antonienhütte, was part of the family company.

Ballestrem was a hereditary member of the Prussian mansion from 1910 to 1918 after the death of his father . This membership was tied to the property of the Plawniowitz family fideikommiss . In addition, he was majorate in Ober-Gläsersdorf ( Lüben district ) and a member of the supervisory board of the Silesian Bank Corporation . He was also a member ("membership record") in the Imperial Automobile Club (1914) and obedience knight in the Catholic Order of Malta .

As a student of law at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , he was a member of the Catholic student association AV Guestfalia Tübingen in the CV . During his studies in Breslau he became a member of the KDStV Winfridia Breslau in the CV in 1881 .
