Toni Pierenkemper

Toni Pierenkemper (born October 17, 1944 in Wiedenbrück ; † July 19, 2019 ) was a German economic and social historian.

Life

Toni Pierenkemper studied economics and sociology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and the London School of Economics, economic history and sociology. In Münster he graduated in 1972 with a degree in economics, in 1975 as an MA (sociology) and in 1977 as Dr. rer. pole. In 1984 he received his habilitation from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. The habilitation thesis analyzed the position of employees on the labor market of the empire.

During his doctorate and habilitation, Toni Pierenkemper worked as a research assistant and assistant at the Institute for Economic and Social History at the Westphalian Wilhelms University with Richard H. Tilly , where he was also a professor from 1985 to 1989. From 1989 to 1990 he taught as a professor for economic and social history at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken . From 1990 to 1997 he was full professor for economic and social history at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, interrupted from 1993 to 1994 (in between as a visiting professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC). From 1997 to 2010 he was director of the seminar for economic and social history at the University of Cologne . Pierenkemper retired in April 2010. He was a member of the Historical Commission for Silesia . In the 2004 summer semester, Pierenkemper was Otto von Freising visiting professor at the Catholic University of Eichstätt .

He was also the managing editor of the Yearbook for Economic History from 1992 to 2009 , and then a member of the editorial committee. One focus of research was research into regional industrialization . He was the founder and editor of the Regional Industrialization series , the first volume of which was published in 2000. In addition, there were socio-historical topics such as work, employment and the development of the modern way of life in the 19th and 20th centuries, and corporate and banking history .
