Life

He was the son of Giovanni Battista Angelo Graf Ballestrem . He came from Savoy , entered the Prussian military service and acquired several properties. The mother was Elisabeth Auguste, geb. Freiin von Stechow . Like his brother Carl Franz von Ballestrem , he joined the cuirassier regiment (No. 12) in Ratibor in 1773 . In 1794 he married Jeanette von Zülow , the daughter of the general of the cavalry Jakob von Zülow . The marriage resulted in nine children, four of whom died in childhood. With the rank of Rittmeister Carl Ludwig retired from active military service in 1802. From then on he lived on a small pension of 300 Reichstalers annually in Ratibor.

After his brother's death in 1822, he took over his property and industrial operations. Immediately after assuming the inheritance, he had a second zinc smelter built in Ruda Śląska . A third hut followed a few years later. In addition, he expanded the coal mining industry. The first civil engineering mine in Upper Silesia was sunk at the Brandenburg mine . Ballestrem had a steam engine purchased for water retention . The investment costs were considerable at 20,000 thalers. The colliery eventually reached a depth of 85 m. After his death, his son Carl Wolfgang von Ballestrem became the heir of the property and the business.

The Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego Ludwik-Concordia is named after him.
