Carl Franz von Ballestrem

Count Carl Franz von Ballestrem (* May 5, 1750 in Woischnik ; † August 14, 1822 in Plawniowitz ) was the owner of a majorate and entrepreneur in the mining industry in Upper Silesia .

Life

He was the son of Giovanni Battista Angelo Graf Ballestrem . He came from Savoy , entered the Prussian military service and acquired several properties. The mother was Elisabeth Auguste Freiin von Stechow . He himself married Katharina von Carlowitz .

Like his father, he initially served in the Prussian army. He was last major in the Upper Silesian Cuirassier Regiment No. 12 in 1797. After his uncle Carl von Stechow died in 1798 without heirs, he inherited the Majorat Plawniowitz . This also included some small coal pits. Ballestrem has greatly expanded the mine ownership through new ideas . In the end, he owned 30 mines, which in 1821 were grouped into twelve operations. Karl Godulla has been the administrator since 1808 . He persuaded Ballestrem to build a zinc smelter in 1812. The Carlhütte was built in Ruda . With fifteen herds it was the largest and most modern facility of its kind in Upper Silesia in 1821. Ballestrem has also expanded its property by purchasing several villages. After his death, his brother Carl Ludwig von Ballestrem took over the property and the business. Godulla built his own, even larger coal empire.
