The Catholic parish church of St. Maria Hilfe der Christisten ( St. Maria auxilium Christianorum ) is a listed church building in Borlinghausen , a district of Willebadessen in the Höxter district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

history

The Catholic baron Oswald von Wendt became the owner of the Borlinghausen estate and castle in 1860 . He was also the builder of the church, which was built at his own expense. He tolerated neither the financial participation of the Borlinghauser residents nor their manual and clamping services .

The church was built from 1869 to 1872 according to plans by the cathedral master builder Arnold Güldenpfennig from Paderborn. Bishop Konrad Martin consecrated the church on October 15, 1872.

After the death of Baron von Wendt in 1877, the property passed through marriage to Count Franz zu Stolberg-Stolberg. He paid the clergyman and gave him housing and maintenance. He paid the necessary religious costs for the church . A process lasting years took place between the congregation and the count, after which the congregation was granted ownership of the church. With a document from Bishop Wilhelm Schneider dated May 9, 1908, the parish was elevated to a branch parish with its own asset management.

On April 1, 1924, Borlinghausen was elevated to a parish vicarie with all the rights and duties of an independent pastoral care district.

architecture

The stones for the construction were extracted in a quarry on the Alsterberg. The neo-Gothic building consisted of a nave with three bays with groin vaults and a narrow choir . On the south side there was a box for the von Wendt family, whose coat of arms can be seen above the portal .

In the first third of the 20th century the church got a painting of the interior and electric light. A wooden floor was laid under the benches. During the Second World War , the building was damaged and repaired after the war. At the same time, stained glass windows were installed in the choir area. The master painter Töpfer from Löwen painted the interior in 1953. An extension by a yoke, also in neo-Gothic forms, was made in 1963 according to plans by the architect Aloys Dietrich.

A gallery was built into the interior. The portal wall was built from the existing stone at a new location according to the old pattern. The flat walls and the simple hipped roof indicate that it was built in the 20th century. The sacristy and the side chapel are added in a contemporary form .

The tower is 30 meters high.

Furnishing

  • The numerous stone carvings were made by two friars.
  • Count Franz zu Stolberg-Stolberg acquired a harmonium, new paraments and church utensils at the end of the 19th century. He also had an organ gallery built.
  • Around 1920, the Baron von Weichs donated an older organ that replaced the harmonium. The organ building company Steigerhoff from Paderborn replaced this instrument in 1953 with a new one, which was in use until 1997. The church received a new organ in 1997.
  • An electric bell and an electric tower clock were installed after the end of World War II.
