History and description

The Bauernburg (Fliehburg) Ottenhausen was probably built around the year 1300. The massive stone work served as a permanent store for food supplies and as a refuge for the people of the area in times of war.

The broken stone building with two floors and a simple saddle roof is still preserved today and has a floor plan of approx. 11.50 m × 10.30 m. It is believed that a third floor originally existed. The outer walls with slotted windows are about 1 meter thick. The ground floor is separated into two long rooms by a longitudinal wall, which are connected by an opening. The upper floor consists of another room.

Written sources about the builders of the castle have not survived, so it is unclear whether it was an originally stately residential tower , a fortified manorial farm or tithe yard , or a building erected by the local farmers to protect their families and supplies. During the Thirty Years' War a certain Johann Braun, an imperial Rittmeister , is said to have purchased the building and expanded it into his residence. Little is known about the use of the building in the following centuries. At the end of the 20th century, the upper floors were demolished and the building, which has only survived as a ruin , was in danger of collapsing. The Heimatverein Ottenhausen eV campaigned for the preservation of the building and restored it in 1981/82.

The farmer's castle is used today by the Ottenhausen Heimatverein. A small local history museum has been located on the upper floor since 1989/90.
