Presidium of the 12th German Bundestag
The Presidium of the 12th German Bundestag consisted of the Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth ( CDU ) and the four deputies Helmuth Becker , Renate Schmidt (both SPD ), Hans Klein ( CSU ) and Dieter-Julius Cronenberg ( FDP ).
Election of the President of the Bundestag
The election of the President of the Bundestag took place in the constituent session of the Bundestag, which was newly elected on December 2, 1990, on December 20, 1990. As in 1983 and 1987, the electoral president and former Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt (SPD) led the election process . Since the Union continued to provide the strongest parliamentary group after the federal election, it traditionally had the right to appoint the President of the Bundestag. The Union parliamentary group leader Alfred Dregger proposed the previous president Rita Süssmuth. She received 525 of 650 votes cast, which corresponds to 80.77%.
Election of the vice-presidents
As in the previous two legislative periods, the election of the vice-presidents was preceded by a vote on the number of vice-presidents. The parliamentary group of the PDS moved to increase the number of vice-presidents. CDU / CSU, SPD and FDP as well as parts of the Greens rejected this, which is why there were still four vice-presidents. As in 1987, the vice-presidents were elected in a combined ballot in a secret ballot. In addition to the previous Vice President Dieter-Julius Cronenberg (FDP), Helmuth Becker , Renate Schmidt (both SPD) and Hans Klein (CSU) were proposed. The Bundestag group of Bündnis 90 / GRÜNE set up Wolfgang Ullmann and the Bundestag group of the PDS Jutta Braband .

A total of 638 votes were cast.
