Presidium of the 19th German Bundestag
The Presidium of the 19th German Bundestag consists of Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble ( CDU ) and the five deputies Thomas Oppermann ( SPD ), Hans-Peter Friedrich ( CSU ) and Petra Pau ( Die Linke ), Wolfgang Kubicki ( FDP ) and Claudia Roth ( Alliance 90 / The Greens ).
Election of the President of the Bundestag
The election of the President of the Bundestag took place in the constituent session of the Bundestag newly elected on September 24, 2017 on October 24, 2017. The electoral process was led by the senior president Hermann Otto Solms (FDP). The actual age president after years in the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, had resigned from the office because it was likely that he would be elected President of the Bundestag.
Since the Union continued to provide the strongest parliamentary group after the federal election, it traditionally had the right to appoint the President of the Bundestag. The Union parliamentary group proposed the previous Federal Finance Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble. This received 501 of the 704 valid votes cast, which corresponded to 71.16%.
Election of the vice-presidents
As four years earlier, the election of the vice-presidents was preceded by a vote on the number of vice-presidents. Each parliamentary group was assigned a vice-president; the number was fixed at six. As before, the vice-presidents were elected by secret ballot, but in a combined ballot. The current vice-presidents Petra Pau (Die Linke) and Claudia Roth (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen) ran. New candidates were Thomas Oppermann (SPD), Hans-Peter Friedrich (CSU), Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP) and Albrecht Glaser (AfD).

The AfD candidate Glaser, who was controversial in the other parliamentary groups because of his demand to withdraw basic rights from Muslims, failed in all three ballots. He could therefore only have run a fourth ballot with the consent of the Council of Elders . On January 18, 2018, the Council of Elders decided not to allow Glaser to run again.
Further ballots from 2018 to 2020
In further ballots, the AfD parliamentary group members Mariana Harder-Kühnel , Gerold Otten and Paul Podolay each failed three times and Karsten Hilse twice so far. This means that there have been 14 unsuccessful attempts to get the party a post in the presidium.
