Maria Spirescu

Maria Spirescu (born April 2, 1980 in Miercurea Ciuc ) is a former Romanian - Bulgarian bobsleigh athlete and track and field athlete .

Spirescu started out as a track and field athlete and specialized in the triple jump . She achieved her personal best of 13.62 m in 2000. In the same year she switched to bobsleigh, where she was included in the Romanian national team and coached by Paul Neagu .

In 2002 Spirescu took part in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In the two-man bobsleigh, she finished 15th with Erika Kovacs . In the World Cup season 2004/05 Spirescu reached 18th place. In 2005 she became Junior World Champion with Viorica Țigău at Königssee .

In the summer of 2005, Spirescu tested positive in a doping control and was then banned for two years. After the suspension expired, she switched to the Bulgarian Federation in 2007 because the National Olympic Committee of Romania no longer allows doped athletes to attend the Olympic Games. With the pusher Cristine Spătaru , also a native of Romania, she contested the European Cup in winter 2007/08, in which she achieved several podium places and a victory in Cesena. At the 2008 Bobsleigh World Championship in Altenberg, the two landed on 15th place.
