The internist Edmund von Neusser was the primary physician in the Rudolf Foundation from 1889 to 1893

The Rudolf Foundation was established in 1858 by Emperor Franz Joseph I on the occasion of the birth of his first son and designated heir to the throne, Crown Prince Rudolf . To this end, he dedicated a 37,120 m² plot of land in the court's own imperial garden. The hospital was completed after eight years of construction and officially opened in 1865. At that time it comprised seven departments and had 860 beds available.

In order to meet the requirements of the 20th century, the Rudolf Foundation was rebuilt in the 1970s. The organ from the chapel was handed over to the church in Roseldorf , where it is still in use today. The seventeen-story building was reopened in 1975. Since then it has comprised around 800 beds and has a helicopter landing pad .

In December 1998 the Mautner Markhof'sche Children's Hospital was closed and the tasks were transferred to the Rudolf Foundation. In September 2002, the Rudolfstiftung incorporated the Semmelweis Women's Clinic , which has since been run as the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
