The Mautner Markhof'sche Children's Hospital was a children's hospital in the 3rd district of Vienna ( Landstrasse ).

history

The children's hospital goes back to a foundation made in autumn 1872 by Adolf Ignaz Mautner ( Adolf Ignaz Mautner von Markhof ) and his wife Julie Marcelline, who had previously been awarded the title of Knight of Markhof .

The couple initially donated 150,000 guilders to the 3rd district of Vienna, Landstrasse, for the construction of a children's hospital, in which children of destitute parents should be admitted regardless of their religion, and - when a suitable building site could not be acquired - an additional three plots in Kleingasse. In addition, the couple's 10 children each donated 6,000 guilders. In addition, the hospital beds and the necessary linen were also financed.

Under the name “ Kronprinz-Rudolf-Kinderspital ”, the building in Baumgasse , built by the city master builder Heinrich Stein according to plans by Eduard Kuschée with around 48 beds, was consecrated on July 1, 1875 and put into operation on September 20 of the same year.

After the death of Adolf Ignaz Mautner von Markhof, the Elisabeth Chapel, which is a listed building, and a scarlet fever and diphtheria pavilion were built in Kleingasse. In 1902 the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Kinderspital received the first X-ray machine .

Between 1909 and 1910, the outpatient clinic of the Crown Prince Rudolf Children's Hospital was built according to plans by Franz Berger.

In the interwar period - in 1921 - the name was initially changed to Mautner Markhof'sches Kinderspital and in 1924 the foundation, which was still supported by the Mautner Markhof family by the Federal Chancellery , was abolished . The reason for this measure was the difficult economic situation and the associated low volume of donations to maintain the hospital. After the Council of Ministers had approved this measure, the municipal council decided to take over the hospital with 200 beds and to continue it in the interests of the donors.

After the Second World War, the city of Vienna first tried to modernize the Mautner Markhof children's hospital. Since the number of children suffering from infectious diseases fell, the children's hospital shifted more and more to the specialist areas of pediatric surgery and intensive neonatology . Marina Marcovich worked out her concept of “gentle neonatology” there.

The attempt to continue the children's hospital after a restructuring of the range of services failed because of the rapidly deteriorating performance figures as a result of falling capacity utilization.

The construction work started in 1985 on the Social Medicine Center Ost - Donauspital initiated a discussion about the continued existence of the Mautner Markhof Children's Hospital, which was to continue until 1998.

After the Vienna City Council approved the relocation of the Mautner Markhof Children's Hospital to the Rudolfstiftung Hospital on March 27, 1998 , it was closed on December 16, 1998. Although the Mautner Markhof family had not had any influence on the hospital they had donated for over 70 years, according to the Vienna City Hall correspondence, City Councilor Doctor Sepp Rieder , State Parliament President Maria Hampel-Fuchs and other city politicians met them in a meeting on November 26, 1997 informed of the closure plans.

Until mid-2000, the former children's hospital was used as a quarters for refugees from Kosovo . On June 27, 2001, the local council approved the sale of the former Mautner Markhof Children's Hospital for around EUR 5.09 million to a bidding consortium .

The successor to the hospital that was demolished in 2002/2003, built by the architectural office Coop Himmelb (l) au , houses the trade union for private employees, printing, journalism, paper on five floors and the professional development institute on three further floors . The relief created by Carl Kundmann - it shows a doctor treating a child - served as an ornament for the entrance in Baumgasse. Today it is attached to a pillar of the new building there.
