Maria Hampel-Fuchs
Maria Hampel-Fuchs (born September 3, 1940 in Hartberg ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) at rest. Hampel was City Councilor in Vienna and First President of the State Parliament.
Hampel-Fuchs grew up in Styria and attended compulsory and commercial school there. She then worked as a secretary and moved to Vienna in 1964. She was appointed federal leader of the Catholic youth and worked from 1970 to 1982 as federal secretary for women in the ÖAAB. After that she was the chairwoman of the social welfare organization in Vienna between 1983 and 2000.
From 1973 onwards, Hampel-Fuchs was involved in politics as a district councilor and district officer for the Austrian women's movement in Vienna- Josefstadt . She was elected to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council in 1978 and was a member of the Vienna City Senate and the Vienna State Government from 1983, but remained without its own department. Between November 29, 1996 and April 27, 2001 she held the office of First President of the State Parliament. Her central political issues were social and health issues, problems with children and young people and the fight against poverty in Vienna. She also started initiatives for the right to speak for patient advocates, child and youth advocates and environmental lawyers in the Vienna State Parliament.
